Red Cross Continues to Assist Residents Affected by Sunset Motel Explosion
Reno NV (February 13, 2020) Volunteers and staff from the American Red Cross of Northern Nevada are continuing to assist residents who were displaced following the recent explosion at the Sunset Motel on east Fourth Street in Reno.The February 1 incident resulted in the loss of several units, which served as living quarters. The motel rents rooms on a weekly and monthly basis. Currently, the Red Cross is assisting 31 adults who were affected by the explosion. Types of assistance provided include pre-loaded debit cards for lodging and supplies, as well as comfort kits, which contain personal hygiene items. In addition, case workers with the Northern Nevada Chapter continue to follow-up with clients to provide additional referrals and community resources that may be available to them.Zanny Marsh, executive director of the Northern Nevada Chapter stated that events like this are a good reminder for everyone to be prepared for any type of sudden loss, but especially a fire.“ Since July 1, Northern Nevada Chapter volunteers have responded to 80 home fires, which leave families struggling with temporary or complete loss of a home,” said Marsh. “Red Cross installs free smoke alarms to help keep families safe and offers education programs that engage adults, families, and kids in preparedness.”
