UPDATE: The last displaced resident has left the emergency evacuation shelter at Orr Middle School, eliminating the need for the shelter to be open. It was closed by 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 30, 2022. The Red Cross of Southern Nevada will continue to assist the residents in the days and weeks ahead, connecting them with community resources. Anyone affected by the storms, or another disaster, is urged to call 1-800-RED-CROSS for assistance.
LAS VEGAS (July 30, 2022) — American Red Cross of Southern Nevada staff and Disaster Action Team volunteers opened an emergency evacuation shelter late last night after monsoon storms knocked trees into powerlines, damaged buildings, and left more than 30 residents of a Las Vegas apartment complex without power.
The Red Cross evacuation shelter was set up at William E. Orr Middle school, 1562 E. Katie Ave., and remains open to provide shelter until all displaced residents have a safe place to stay. “Trained Red Cross volunteers and staff have met with families to provide immediate assistance and emotional support,” said Rachel Flanigan, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter. Those affected by this storm or another disaster, are urged to call 1-800-RED-CROSS for assistance.
“Our teams are on call round-the-clock and ready to assist in various aspects, including sheltering, feeding, disaster assessment, casework, and more,” Flanigan said. “We are committed to helping all those affected by last night’s storms and providing services for as long as we’re needed.
The Red Cross of Southern Nevada works closely with local emergency management and community partners to coordinate relief efforts. “Last week, our staff, volunteers, and partners responded to nine home fires. We’ve been managing another extremely busy disaster season, and it’s critical to have a trained and ready volunteer workforce to make sure we can provide relief at a moment’s notice – every day,” she said. “These disasters illustrate how important our specialized volunteers are to this community.”
