RENO, Nev. (Feb. 22, 2022) – The American Red Cross of Northern Nevada is seeking volunteers in several capacities to serve throughout the area. In addition to needing volunteers for its Disaster Action Team, assistance is needed to help local children learn about disaster preparedness through the Prepare with Pedro and the Pillowcase Project programs.
“More volunteers are required throughout our chapter,” explained Mary Powell, executive director of the Northern Nevada Chapter, “so we can ensure that critical needs of both adults and children are met, whether it’s responding in emergencies or teaching preparedness.”
Members of the Disaster Action Team respond to local home fires, which can destroy nearly everything a family owns in a matter of minutes. Partnering with local fire departments, Disaster Action Team volunteers connect with families to provide emotional support and emergency financial assistance, along with information and resources to help families begin to recover.
“Personal disasters, such as home fires, may not always make the news, but they are nonetheless devastating to those affected,” Powell added. “This is why the work of our volunteers is so important, and the need for them remains crucial.”
Volunteers at all levels receive training and are given the opportunity to increase their knowledge and experience through participation in other Red Cross training and volunteer programs. “Red Cross volunteers keep our communities strong. Without their energy, flexibility, and deeply giving hearts, we would not be able to carry out our mission,” Powell emphasized.
