Northern Nevada Volunteers Creating Change
In 2023, more than 500 Northern Nevadans volunteered with the Red Cross, playing a crucial role in disaster relief, safety information and preparedness programs. “Northern Nevada volunteers responded to over 100 home fires, assisting more than 250 neighbors. We also installed over 400 smoke alarms in local homes,” Rushing said.
Supporting Your Community
Home fires are the most common disaster in the nation, often leaving families in urgent need. Rushing emphasized the critical role of the Disaster Action Team volunteers, who provide emotional comfort, financial aid, and essential guidance to help families recover. “The presence of the Red Cross of Northern Nevada and its volunteers is key to ensuring that displaced locals receive the vital support they need,” she added.
Northern and Rural Nevada needs additional Disaster Action Team volunteers to ensure a swift response when disasters occur. Once trained, Red Cross disaster volunteers are prepared to respond to local emergencies, like home fires, offering immediate support on-site or remotely. With experience and further training, volunteers can also assist in major emergencies or disasters both locally and nationwide. Explore disaster volunteer opportunities at redcross.org/DAT.
“Knowing that someone is there to lend a helping hand during trying times provides a much-needed sense of hope for our neighbors,” Ruster said. “Please join us by volunteering to help those in need, ensuring no one in Northern Nevada faces life’s emergencies alone.”
