LAS VEGAS (April 5, 2023) — The American Red Cross of Southern Nevada is calling on the community’s generosity to help fund ongoing relief efforts here and across the country. The Red Cross is committed to providing help and hope to those affected by recent flooding, and tornadoes – and financial donations are urgently needed to continue this critical work.
"We’re experiencing an increase in natural disasters and emergencies, and the need for relief services continues to grow," said Rachel Flanigan, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter. "This lifesaving work is only possible because generous supporters are willing to help families in crisis. And we’re counting on help from our residents today.”
Financial contributions are the quickest way to help to those who need it most, providing flexibility to purchase necessities specific to the disaster and area. “Donations make a difference in the lives of neighbors right here in Southern Nevada, as well as to those in the South and Midwest affected by severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, and people in California recovering from flooding,” Flanigan said.
Donate today
Visit redcross.org/donate, call 800-RED-CROSS (800-733-2767), or text the word REDCROSS to 90999. Every financial donation – no matter the size – brings hope to those affected. For example, $5 can provide a blanket, and $10 can provide a meal.
Locally this past month, the Red Cross of Southern Nevada staff and volunteers responded to 14 home fires, assisting 50 residents with immediate needs, and connecting them with community resources to start to recover. “We need to be ready for more home fires as the summer brings hot, dry weather,” Flanigan said.
In the South and Midwest, more than 800 trained Red Cross disaster workers are still on the ground in impacted areas across multiple states, “and more help is on the way,” Flanigan said. “Working with partners, we have provided more than 78,600 meals and served more than 5,200 households with relief supplies in the affected communities.”
In California, more than 1,730 trained Red Cross disaster workers have deployed to the state since the atmospheric rivers began in late December, displacing tens of thousands of people. “The Red Cross and partners have provided more than 24,800 overnight stays for more than 2,800 residents in 145 emergency shelters and more than 150,000 meals and snacks,” Flanigan said.
Dedicated teams work tirelessly to provide food, shelter, and support to victims of disasters, “and donations, big and small, are what make that possible,” she said.
