LAS VEGAS (Oct. 20, 2023) — This Saturday, Oct. 21, American Red Cross Volunteers in Southern Nevada will visit 75 homes in the Sun City Summerlin senior-adult community to install free smoke alarms and give free home fire safety information. Members of the media are welcome to attend the event, and we encourage interested community members to volunteer with us installing smoke alarms.
We know the need for smoke alarms in our community is significant: home fires kill on average 2,500 people per year in the United States, most in homes that lack smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half and having an escape plan further improves the odds of survival. So far this year, volunteers in Southern Nevada have installed more than 1,600 alarms and we are on-track to install hundreds more.
“The American Red Cross is committed to preventing human suffering wherever we can, and one vital way we accomplish that mission is through Sound the Alarm events like this one,” explained Rachel Flanigan, the Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada. “Contact the Red Cross of Southern Nevada if you can't afford a smoke alarm or are physically unable to install one or check its batteries. We may be able to assist.”
Sun City Summerlin Event Details:
When: Saturday Oct. 21, check-in begins at 8:15 a.m., installations begin 9 a.m.- 1 p.m.
Where: 9107 Del Webb Blvd. Las Vegas, NV 89134
Volunteers will be assigned to groups of two or three and will visit five homes, each of whom are expecting our visit. At each home, the volunteers will check existing smoke alarms and change batteries where needed, install new smoke alarms, go over fire prevention information, and give the resident a home fire escape plan.
