RENO, Nev. (March 5, 2024) — Starting today, over 100 leaders from the American Red Cross from Nevada and 11 other states will meet this week in Reno, sharing innovative strategies that enhance support for communities across the country. Also, they will volunteer at five local nonprofits on Wednesday, showcasing unity with these organizations and reinforcing the Red Cross commitment to the Reno community.
“By exchanging ideas, we aim to extend our reach and bring the benefits of Red Cross programs to more people in need,” said Tiandra Rushing, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Northern Nevada Chapter. “It's an honor for Reno to host such dedicated humanitarians who tirelessly work for their communities.”
These leaders, representing the diverse chapters of the Red Cross's Southwest and Rocky Mountain Division, will focus on various topics integral to Red Cross mission. Among the subjects up for discussion are enhancing disaster response, generative AI and community engagement. The leaders bring a wealth of experience from diverse states: Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.
Red Crossers helping nonprofits
Demonstrating the organization's commitment to making a difference, the Red Cross leaders will volunteer at five local nonprofits on Wednesday, March 6, beginning at 9 a.m. The Red Cross leaders will lend a hand to these organizations – the Nevada Humane Society, Northern Nevada RAVE Family Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows, and Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful (KTMB).
“We're proud of our longstanding partnerships with these five nonprofit organizations and many others that help meet the needs of the people in Northern and Rural Nevada,” Rushing said. “The Red Cross not only supports the community but also appreciates the efforts of our neighbors who devote their time to other worthy causes.”
The Red Cross works closely with many nonprofits when responding to emergencies and helping communities prepare. “KTMB couldn't fulfill our mission without volunteer groups like the American Red Cross,” said Matt Webber, Volunteer Cleanup Coordinator for Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful. “Their commitment to service is valued and appreciated by KTMB as we continue our long tradition of working to improve the beauty, health and safety of our region.”
Red Cross Month
The conference coincides with Red Cross Month, a national celebration of the vital work of our volunteers. In 2023, over 500 Northern Nevadans volunteered with the Red Cross, contributing to a national force of more than 275,000 volunteers who serve their communities. Volunteers take on a range of responsibilities, from disaster response and blood collection support to assisting military families and aiding emergency preparedness. Volunteers make up about 90% of the Red Cross workforce, underscoring their vital role in the organization's capacity to deliver aid and support. Learn more by visiting redcross.org/VolunteerToday.
