LAS VEGAS (Sept. 2, 2025) — The American Red Cross of Southern Nevada is assisting 39 residents displaced by a three-alarm apartment fire near Maryland Parkway and Tropicana Avenue on Tuesday morning. Volunteers will remain on-site Wednesday to ensure residents have access to shelter, resources and recovery assistance.
“This fire has disrupted the lives of dozens of residents, and our focus is on providing immediate assistance and resources to help them recover,” said Rachel Flanigan, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter. “Our volunteers are working tirelessly to ensure that every displaced resident has access to shelter, essential supplies and the support they need during this challenging time.”
As of Tuesday evening, 13 families affected by the apartment fire at 5050 Tamarus St. have received assistance from the Red Cross, with more residents expected to seek help in the coming days. Red Cross volunteers will be available at the apartment complex office, on Wednesday, Sept. 3, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., to provide recovery support and Red Cross services to displaced residents. Anyone affected by this fire, or other disasters, can call the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
Red Cross Support
The fire broke out around 11 a.m. on Tuesday and was fueled by high winds, which caused it to spread rapidly between two buildings. According to the apartment complex management, the fire damaged or destroyed 31 units, 30 of which were occupied.
A shelter was opened Tuesday at the Cambridge Recreation Center to support displaced residents. The Red Cross provided cots, equipment and volunteers to assist with shelter operations. All residents were able to find safe accommodations, and Red Cross assistance was not required for overnight stays.
Red Cross of Southern Nevada Home Fire Responses
This year alone, Red Cross of Southern Nevada volunteers have responded to more than 185 home fires, assisting over 800 people. In 2024, the Red Cross responded to nearly 350 home fires in Southern Nevada, helping more than 1,350 residents. Red Cross Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers play a critical role in providing immediate assistance to those affected by home fires, including temporary shelter, emotional support and recovery planning resources to help families rebuild after a disaster.
Supporting Your Community
Home fires are the most common disaster in the United States, often leaving families in urgent need of aid. The Red Cross and its volunteers play a vital role in ensuring displaced residents receive the support and resources they need to recover and rebuild their lives.
The Red Cross is seeking additional volunteers in Southern Nevada to meet the growing demand for disaster response. After training, volunteers are prepared to assist during local emergencies and, with additional training and experience, deploy to major disasters nationwide.
