LAS VEGAS (May 30, 2025) — The American Red Cross of Southern Nevada is proud to celebrate the remarkable contributions of 15 local volunteers who exemplify dedication and service at its annual Volunteer Recognition Event. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, May 31, at the Cannery Casino & Hotel, 2121 E. Craig Rd. in North Las Vegas, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. These extraordinary people, along with over 1,100 volunteers throughout Southern Nevada, will be honored for their unwavering commitment to supporting their communities.
The event honors volunteers for their involvement in key Red Cross initiatives, including disaster relief efforts nationwide, response to flooding and residential fires, emergency preparedness, assistance to military families, teaching lifesaving skills and introducing students to preparedness.
Celebrating a Year of Dedication and Impact
Over the past year, volunteers from Southern Nevada have collectively contributed more than 41,000 hours of service. Recognizing their indispensable efforts, Rachel Flanigan, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter, stated, “Volunteers are the lifeblood of the American Red Cross, driving our mission forward through their service and commitment. Whether they’re supporting the military community, installing smoke alarms to protect families, providing preparedness information or responding to local or nationwide disasters, their efforts create a lasting impact. With more than 90% of our workforce comprised of volunteers, we simply could not achieve our vital work without their dedication.”
Highlighting Exceptional Volunteer Leadership
The event’s highlight will be the presentation of the prestigious Clara Barton Award for Meritorious Volunteer Leadership to Rockee Nelson of Las Vegas. Named after the founder of the American Red Cross, this award recognizes outstanding volunteer leadership.
“Rockee has been a dedicated representative of the Red Cross throughout Southern Nevada for many years,” said Flanigan. “Her commitment extends far beyond our state and region, as she has supported communities across the country impacted by disasters.”
Rockee’s contributions span mentoring new volunteers, leading Emergency Response Vehicle training, supporting blood drives and disaster deployments, all while championing preparedness initiatives like Sound the Alarm. Her quiet yet impactful leadership inspires others through thoughtful solutions, unwavering dedication and a heartfelt commitment to serving the community.
