NEW YORK, January 18, 2023 – The American Red Cross in Greater New York will host its annual Heroes Among Us Gala on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in Manhattan from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. This event will celebrate the mission of the Red Cross and honor civic leaders and community heroes.
Event co-chairs are Ashleigh Banfield, host of Banfield on NewsNation, and Tonia Bottoms, Managing Director & Senior Managing Counsel, BNY Mellon Pershing.
Honorees for the evening include:
BNY Mellon: The 2023 American Red Cross Corporate Leadership honoree is BNY Mellon. The Corporate Leadership Award recognizes an organization that is dedicated to giving back and making an impact in their community through philanthropy. BNY Mellon has been a passionate supporter of the American Red Cross for decades – a demonstration of the firm’s humanitarian leadership. Whether helping New York after Hurricane Sandy, supporting families after devastating wildfires, providing life-saving aid during emergencies abroad, or encouraging community involvement with their near 50,000-strong employees, BNY Mellon has shown dedication to values of the American Red Cross time again. BNY Mellon is a true supporter of our mission and we are deeply grateful for their support.
John Osborn: The 2023 American Red Cross Humanitarian honoree is John Osborn. Osborn is the founder of Coldbrook Consulting, LLC. A well-known marketing leader, he most recently served as Chief Executive Officer of OMD USA. Osborn is the immediate past chairman of the Board of Directors for the American Red Cross in Greater New York, a position he held for seven years. For 15 years, he served on the Board of Directors of the Police Athletic League of New York, where he was President of the Board for 10 years. In this role, he worked closely with the Commissioner’s Office of the NYPD and the District Attorney’s office to serve over 40,000 underprivileged children of New York City. He is also President of GlobalDignity.org and on the Board of the Woodstock Foundation in Woodstock, Vermont.
Fritz Sam: The 2023 American Red Cross Good Samaritan Hero honoree is Fritz Sam. In August 2022, Sam, an Uber driver, spotted a house on fire in Brooklyn, New York, while driving a passenger to LaGuardia airport. He immediately pulled over and sprang into action, saving the lives of two residents.
Corion Evans: The 2023 American Red Cross National Hero honoree is Corion Evans of Mississippi. In July 2022, Evans, then 16 years old, jumped into a river to rescue three individuals after their car drove off the road into the Pascagoula River in Moss Point, Mississippi. During the rescue effort, a police officer began to struggle as well, and Corion helped bring him to shore safely, too.
Davyon Johnson: The 2023 American Red Cross Youth Humanitarian honoree is Davyon Johnson of Muskogee, Oklahoma. In December 2021, Johnson, then 11 years old, performed abdominal thrusts on a classmate who was choking on a bottle cap. On the same day he helped a disabled woman exit her burning home safely.
The American Red Cross depends on the generous support of the American public to fulfill its vital mission. Proceeds raised during the 2023 Heroes Among Us Gala will enable the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people affected by disasters like hurricanes, home fires, and countless other crises.
