Our hearts go out to the Nicetown community following a tragic explosion that occured early Sunday morning, June 29th, on the 1900 block of Bristol Street in Philadelphia.

The American Red Cross supported a Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management (OEM) reception center throughout the day and evening Sunday at Edward T. Steele Elementary School for those evacuated.

Along with our partners, the Red Cross helped serve meals and provided water, snacks and emotional support to those impacted. The reception center closed Sunday night as utility service was restored and many residents were able to return to their homes.

Red Cross disaster workers were in the community Sunday through Wednesday assessing the needs of those impacted, distributing clean-up kits, connecting residents with community resources and providing support services.

The Red Cross provided financial assistance to six families who were not able to reoccupy their homes. Our disaster workers also provided support services for 8 additional families.
