To help commemorate Red Cross Month, the American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania Region is partnering with Kennett Library’s health literacy initiative, Live Better, for a day of free educational and lifesaving activities on Monday, March 4 from 1-6 p.m. All activities will take place at Kennett Library, 320 E. State St. in Kennett Square, and are open to the community. For information, visit KennettLibrary.org or call 610-444-2702.
The event kicks off with a Red Cross blood drive from 1-6 p.m. Donors are asked to schedule a blood donation appointment in advance by visiting RedCrossBlood.org and entering sponsor code KLIB. Walk-in donations may be accepted as time and space allow.
For adults and teens, the Red Cross will present Be Red Cross Ready workshops at 1:30 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. and will offer Hands-Only CPR training at 2:30 p.m. Be Red Cross Ready helps take the stress out of disaster preparation. Participants will learn tips for preparing their families – including older adults, children and pets – for local disasters. Facilitators will also share home fire and flooding preparedness tips. During Hands-Only CPR, participants will learn 8 simple steps they can use to help someone who is experiencing cardiac arrest.
For children, the Red Cross will offer Prepare with Pedro (ideal for grades K-2) at 3:30 p.m. and The Pillowcase Project (ideal for grades 3-5) at 4:30 p.m. Prepare with Pedro is a 30-minute preparedness education program that teaches young students how to be prepared and take action for local disasters, including home fires. The Pillowcase Project is a 45-minute preparedness education program that teaches elementary students about personal and family preparedness and safety skills, local disasters and basic coping skills. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
In addition to the scheduled programs, participants are welcome to stop by the Red Cross volunteer recruitment table throughout the event to learn about the many volunteer opportunities the Red Cross has available.
