In coordination with local community partners, the American Red Cross Delaware Valley opened a shelter tonight at Blockson Middle School to support individuals and families affected by a home fire that occurred Wednesday afternoon on the 900 block of W. Airy Street in Norristown.
At the shelter, Red Cross volunteers are providing a safe place to stay, meals and snacks, access to device charging, comfort and care items and emotional support.
The shelter will remain open until at least 8 a.m. Thursday, May 14. At that time, the Red Cross will work with municipal and community partners to assess ongoing needs and determine next steps for those in our care.
About the Home Fire
The Times Herald reports that the two-alarm fire broke out around 12:45 p.m. after a tree fell onto power lines, sparking flames that spread to several homes along West Airy Street, displacing more than two dozen people.
The Red Cross initially opened a reception center at ACLAMO on W. Marshall Street before moving it to Blockson Middle School. The reception center transitioned into an overnight shelter on Wednesday evening.
