Three years ago, Jit Baral was looking for a new sense of purpose.
“After losing my 29-year-old son, I lost my job too. I was searching for the best ways to honor my son,” he said.
Through the American Red Cross, Jit found that sense of purpose: helping people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. In the last three years, Jit has dedicated countless hours to supporting families and communities who need it, especially those who have been impacted by disasters.
In June 2026, he deployed to Indiana after a tornado tore through Merrillville, impacting millions and leaving countless others without power or a place to sleep.
Jit supported shelter operations for several days. He helped check in shelter residents, distributed meals and assisted with other tasks as needed. He also made a lasting impact on one resident who was experiencing mobility challenges.
“There was a shelter resident living on his own. I helped him go to the restroom every time he needed it. Each trip was about 20 minutes.”
For Jit, moments like this are often the most meaningful. Whether helping someone physically, offering a listening ear, or simply being present during a difficult time, Jit is happy to bring comfort to all the people he interacts with at the Red Cross.
“Helping others is the best practice of humanity.”
