Blood helps save lives! In honor of National Sickle Cell Awareness Month, on September 19, the American Red Cross teamed up with Jack and Jill of America of America, Inc. to host blood drives nationwide in support of sickle cell patients.
To support sickle cell patients who are dependent on blood transfusions to manage pain and symptoms, prevent strokes and organ damage, and replenish oxygen-carrying red blood cells, Jack and Jill of America rallied some of its Orange County chapter members to roll up a sleeve to donate blood. Among them were Shanaeya Nelson, Jack and Jill OC Chapter President, and Coretta Morning, Orange County Chapter Community Service Chair. Both shared that Jack and Jill of America is an organization of mothers committed to raising the next generation of African American leaders through community service, philanthropy, and civic duty.
The need for more African American blood donors is crucial; they are almost three times more likely than other donors to be a match for sickle cell patients, helping to prevent transfusion-related complications. By partnering with the Red Cross at blood drives across the nation, Jack and Jill of America was able to participate in raising awareness about health disparities that disproportionately affect racially and ethnically diverse populations. They also increased awareness for the need for a diverse blood supply, improving the health of our community and helping to save lives.
It was inspiring and uplifting to be among this group of mothers who were spending their Saturday giving the gift of life to those in need; showing up in support of one another; and truly enjoying being together while serving a valuable and vital cause.
