Remembering Edith Carol Evans' 40 years of service with the Red Cross

One of my core beliefs is also a core value: Service. I believe that humans, at their very best, are made to notice the world around us and make it better through service. Whether that is noticing a neighbor with car trouble and giving a ride or taking the time to learn and be ready with CPR if someone has an emergency, opportunities to serve are all around us.
On Saturday, Oct. 26, we had the opportunity to celebrate a person who excelled at service. Edith Carol Evans served with the Red Cross for 40 years! She contributed in so many impactful ways over those years. She helped so many people over that time.
We planted a tree in her memory, said a few words and dedicated a bench that all are welcome to enjoy. In doing so, I, too, was moved to slow down and take stock of my actions. Are my eyes and ears open to the small opportunities all around me?
As we remembered and celebrated how Edith lived, we also heard from her family members who shared how they were impacted by Edith’s commitment to serve her community. Bringing nieces with her to the Red Cross office after their school day ended. Learning first aid and CPR. Being encouraged to take swimming lessons. Her legacy lives on in another generation who hold the picture of their sister, their aunt and their friend close to their heart. Edith’s efforts will continue to spur them on in their everyday life as they seek to make things just a bit better with every act of service.
I look forward to sitting on Edith’s bench under her tree from time to time. I’ll think about how Edith’s life inspired her family. I’ll remember how every small act of service over forty years adds up to a truly impactful life. I am renewed in my desire to see the opportunities to serve. I’m moved by the symbol of a tree dedicated to Edith’s life. Strength. Growth. Perseverance.
And best of all, both the bench and the tree will carry forward in their own paths of service. Shade. Rest. Comfort. All thanks to Edith.
