Three volunteers from our region, Susan Buczkowski, Sandy Birdsong and Miriyam Nitzberg, deployed to support troops on U.S. military bases overseas for a six-month assignment as part of our Service to the Armed Forces reservist program.
In March, more than 100 student athletes at Newark High School in Delaware took a break from practice to learn hands-only CPR with Red Cross volunteers Ellen Conway and Chris Stranahan.
News Story: Helping save lives when every second counts
A groundbreaking new program was launched this year to provide Red Cross blood products on DC Fire and EMS ambulances. More than 130 units of blood had been administered to patients en route to the hospital -- helping save lives when every second counts.
Red Cross NCGC volunteers and staff participated in several PRIDE events throughout the region in June, including marching in the Baltimore PRIDE parade.

Red Cross NCGC collaborated with the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre to install a beautiful mural in our Silver Spring, Maryland office. We are honored to host a piece of art that highlights extreme heat and focuses on ways we all can #BeatTheHeat.
In June, severe storms and tornadoes ripped through the region, causing damage. Red Cross volunteers went out into affected communities the next morning to hand out food, supplies and connect residents with recovery resources.
Red Cross NCGC volunteers collaborated with local fire departments and partners throughout the region to install thousands of free, lifesaving smoke alarms in local homes through our Sound the Alarm Program.

A Laurel, Maryland father and son are credited with saving the life of a fellow passenger on a recent flight from BWI to Florida. They provided CPR for an incredible 45 minutes until the plane could make an emergency landing.
