FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Fairfax, VA, December 12, 2023 -- On December 4, 2023 the Red Cross of the National Capital & Greater Chesapeake Region welcomed Juan Garcia as the new Executive Director for the Red Cross of Northern Virginia following Courtney Bulger’s September 2023 retirement from the organization.
“I could not be more excited about bringing Juan onto the team,” said Dale Kunce, CEO for the Red Cross of the National Capital & Greater Chesapeake Region. “With a renewed focus on equitable mission delivery, Juan is the clear leader of choice for Northern Virginia.”
Juan is no stranger to the American Red Cross, most recently serving as an advocate for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) at the American Red Cross National Headquarters, where he held the vital role of DEI Business Partner. Previously, Juan excelled as the Senior Program Manager at SAIC, a prominent federal defense contracting firm with a vast workforce of over 23,000 employees across the United States and more than 40 countries. Juan's academic journey includes a bachelor's degree in Russian from Grinnell College, where he also distinguished himself as a Fulbright Scholar, Mellon Mays Fellow and Posse Foundation Scholar. He is also currently an MBA candidate at William and Mary's Raymond A. Mason School of Business.
“I am eager to help deliver our lifesaving Red Cross mission in Northern Virginia,” said Garcia. “This role is an opportunity to even further strengthen essential partnerships among all facets of our vibrant community.”
In addition to teaching skills - like CPR – that save lives, collecting lifesaving blood and supporting the U.S. military community, the Northern Virginia Chapter of the Red Cross works 24/7/365 to ensure those with disaster-caused needs in Alexandria City, Arlington County, Fairfax City, Fairfax County, Falls Church City, Loudon County and Prince William County have access to lifesaving support and essential resources. Most often led by the power of volunteers, Northern Virginia Chapter disaster workers provide financial resources and health and mental health support following home fire-related emergencies—around 400 incidents on average, per calendar year.
As the executive director, Juan will work closely with the chapter’s all-volunteer board of directors – focusing on volunteer engagement, biomedical collections, diversity, equity and inclusion and raising the donor dollars necessary to fuel the lifesaving work of the American Red Cross.
