Some lives leave a legacy that continues to make a difference long after they are gone. Mary “Mimi” Shafey was one of those extraordinary individuals.
A dedicated nurse, philanthropist, and champion for her community, Mimi spent her life caring for others. After moving to Miami in 1977, she built a distinguished career in healthcare, serving in leadership roles at Miami Heart Institute, Mercy Hospital, and the University of Miami School of Nursing. Her compassion and commitment to service became defining qualities throughout her life.
Mimi's dedication extended far beyond her professional career. She was actively involved with numerous charitable organizations throughout South Florida, including Camillus House, the Junior League of Miami, and the American Red Cross. A passionate supporter of the Red Cross mission, Mimi served on the Board of the Greater Miami and the Keys Chapter as Philanthropy Chair and previously chaired the organization's successful Centennial Celebration Ball. She was also a member of the Tiffany Circle National Council, serving two consecutive terms and contributing to the Communications and Resources Committee.
In recognition of her remarkable generosity and commitment to helping others, Mimi was honored with the American Red Cross South Florida Region's 2018 Do Unto Others Philanthropy Award. She was especially passionate about supporting Service to the Armed Forces and Red Cross Health Services programs, causes that reflected both her nursing background and her deep desire to care for those in need.
Whether she was volunteering her time, supporting charitable initiatives, mentoring others, or simply offering a helping hand, Mimi embodied the spirit of compassion and service. Her impact on the South Florida community is immeasurable, and her legacy continues to inspire all who knew her.
Today, the American Red Cross is proud to honor Mimi's memory through a special fundraising effort to name a disaster response vehicle in her honor. This vehicle will travel throughout South Florida, delivering relief, comfort, and hope to families facing emergencies and disasters. From home fires to hurricanes, it will serve as a lasting tribute to a woman whose life was dedicated to helping others.
