As South Florida communities begin to recover from days of heavy rainfall and flooding, American Red Cross volunteers continue to provide critical support to individuals and families navigating the aftermath of the severe weather.
What began with emergency sheltering has expanded to include the distribution of cleanup supplies and damage assessments, as Red Cross teams work alongside local emergency management officials, first responders and community partners to help impacted communities take the next steps toward recovery.
For residents returning to flood-impacted homes and neighborhoods, the road to recovery can feel overwhelming. Having access to basic cleanup supplies can make a meaningful difference as families begin picking up the pieces. To help meet this need, Red Cross teams have distributed 200 cleanup kits across Indian River and St. Lucie counties, providing 100 kits in each county to support residents beginning the cleanup process.
At the same time, Red Cross disaster assessment teams have begun evaluating damage in Okeechobee and St. Lucie counties. These assessments are an important part of the response, helping identify unmet needs and guide ongoing recovery efforts as communities work to move forward.
