When disasters strike, American Red Cross volunteers are ready to answer the call, wherever help is needed. Right now, volunteers from across the South Florida Region are supporting communities impacted by tornadoes, flooding, wildfires and Super Typhoon Bavi, bringing compassion, experience and a helping hand to people during difficult moments.

Steven Ortega | Broward County Chapter

For Broward County volunteer Steven Ortega, his first Red Cross deployment brought him to Menasha, Wisconsin, where he is supporting communities impacted by tornadoes and flooding through Community Engagement and Partnerships.

A lifelong Green Bay Packers fan, serving in the heart of Packers country has made the experience even more meaningful. Steven has teamed up with longtime Red Cross volunteer Vivian Moy from the Greater New York Region, who is helping guide him through his first deployment as they work together to connect affected communities with Red Cross support and resources.

Michelle Bratton | Southwest Florida Chapter

In Washington, Michelle Bratton is supporting the Red Cross response to wildfires as a Shelter Manager. With disaster operations constantly evolving, Michelle has stepped into a variety of roles wherever she is needed most; from helping coordinate shelter workforce placement to visiting shelter teams and managing an outdoor RV shelter at a county fairgrounds.

“It’s hot and smoky, staying busy doing a variety of roles,” Michelle shared. “We’re jumping in wherever needed.”

Gary Pelletier | Palm Beach & Treasure Coast Chapter

Thousands of miles from home, Gary Pelletier raised his hand to deploy to Guam following Super Typhoon Bavi. Serving as an Assistant Director for Information & Planning, Gary is helping support the Red Cross disaster relief operation as teams assess damage, identify community needs and support shelters across Guam, Saipan, Tinian and Rota.

From Wisconsin and Washington to Guam, these South Florida Red Cross volunteers are showing what it means to turn compassion into action. No matter the distance, they are carrying the Red Cross mission with them and helping ensure communities facing disasters don't have to face them alone.
