More than 90 disaster deployments and decades of service come together as Red Cross volunteers mobilize across the Gulf Coast ahead of Tropical Storm Isaias.
As Tropical Storm Isaias approaches, volunteers from across the South Florida Region are answering the call before the storm makes landfall. Deploying to the Florida Panhandle, Alabama and Louisiana, these dedicated disaster responders are leaving their homes and families to help communities prepare, ensuring shelters, warehouses and emergency operations are ready to support those who may be impacted.
Among them is Eugene Eccli, a Broward County volunteer and shelter supervisor who joined the Red Cross in 2024. Despite being one of our newer volunteers, Eugene recently deployed to Northwest Indiana following tornadoes and has once again raised his hand to support communities facing a potential disaster.
Robert McConnachie, a Palm Beach and Treasure Coast volunteer, U.S. Army veteran and shelter supervisor, brings extensive disaster experience to the operation. Since joining the Red Cross in 2014, Robert has deployed more than 25 times nationwide, including assignments this year in Hawaii, Illinois, Guam and Louisiana. As a shelter supervisor, Robert helps ensure shelter teams are prepared to provide a safe, organized and welcoming environment for families who may need a safe place to stay during and after the storm.
Supporting critical logistics operations are Joe Poplawski Sr. and Phil Ward, both from the Southwest Florida Chapter. Joe, a volunteer since 2019, has deployed more than 15 times, while Phil, who has served since 2013, has deployed more than 30 times. Their efforts are helping position supplies and resources where they may be needed most should the storm impact the region.
Also deploying is Roberto De La Torre, a Mid-Florida volunteer who has served since 2005 and deployed more than 15 times in support of disaster operations nationwide. Most recently, Roberto assisted with flood relief efforts in Ohio before once again stepping forward to support preparedness efforts ahead of Isaias.
Collectively, these volunteers represent more than 90 disaster deployments and nearly 50 years of Red Cross service. Their willingness to mobilize before a storm strikes demonstrates the power of preparedness and the extraordinary commitment of Red Cross volunteers. Thanks to the generosity of donors and supporters, volunteers like these are trained, equipped and ready to help communities prepare, respond and recover when disasters threaten.
Before the first rain bands arrive, these volunteers are already on the ground, turning compassion into action and helping communities across the Gulf Coast prepare for whatever the storm may bring.
