Idaho volunteer Stetson Gustafson has stepped into key leadership roles within our region and made significant contributions to our wildfire response this summer.
A severe car accident nearly shattered Stetson Gustafson’s body — but it couldn’t stop his determination to help others. Now, at just 30, he’s a rising star at the Red Cross of Idaho, Montana and East Oregon.
Stetson recently marked his one-year anniversary with the Red Cross, and in that short time he has already taken on key leadership roles. This summer, he played an important part in the response to the Windy Rock Fire, which forced evacuations near Drummond, Mont. Earlier this year, he also helped dispatch volunteers to Los Angeles during the Southern California wildfires that destroyed more than 18,000 homes and structures.
And he serves as our Regional Preparedness Program Lead, guiding efforts to help communities get ready before disaster strikes.
Much of Stetson’s work happens virtually, assisting with disaster responses over the phone or computer — a setup that accommodates the challenges he faces from his injuries.
“The car accident broke almost all the bones in my body,” Stetson said. “Because I have a decent amount of disability, it sometimes stops me from going out on calls.”
Stetson came to the Red Cross at the recommendation of his mother, who volunteers with the organization in Ohio. It didn’t take much convincing.
“When I was settling into life in Idaho, she suggested I check it out,” he said. “The Red Cross is very accommodating, allowing me to work virtually, dispatching other volunteers and other workers when they are needed most.”
Beyond our region, Stetson also assists the Texas Gulf Coast team as their Disaster Activeness Program Lead. Closer to home, he has helped recruit several new volunteers — and even brought his husband along on a few calls.
For Stetson, the payoff is simple yet powerful. “Being able to be there for people during their worst times is rewarding,” he said.
And his commitment shows no sign of slowing.
“I absolutely see myself as a lifetime Red Crosser, perhaps moving up to an even larger volunteer role.”
