Thousands took to Julia Street in their crisp summer whites on a steamy August night for the annual White Linen Night in the Arts District of New Orleans. And while evening temperatures hovered stubbornly in the mid-90s with classic Louisiana humidity, local art lovers didn’t let the sweltering heat dampen their stride.
Along with the live music, gallery openings and food trucks, dedicated American Red Cross volunteers set up shop to ensure the party stayed safe and hydrated.
Stationed near the Arthur Roger Gallery, the Red Cross cooling team handed out hundreds of ice-cold cooling towels and hydration electrolyte packets to gallery-hoppers, artists and families strolling through the event.
For the crowd, wrapping a chilled towel around their neck felt like pure relief. For our volunteers, it was just another Saturday night doing what they love best: taking care of their neighbors.
Between conversations about gallery exhibits and food, volunteers shared tips on heat safety and hurricane preparedness. The event illustrates that our work doesn’t start when disaster strikes... It starts by looking out for our neighbors before a crisis even hits.
