When disaster strikes, strong communities are built long before the emergency begins. That belief is at the heart of the growing partnership between the Red Cross and the Gardere Initiative, a collaboration focused on strengthening preparedness, expanding local resources, and empowering Baton Rouge residents with the skills they need to care for themselves and one another.
The partnership was recently celebrated through a technology donation designed to enhance the Gardere Initiative's role as a trusted community hub in Louisiana’s capital city. Among the resources provided was a solar-powered generator that will help establish the Gardere Initiative as a resilience and resource center during disasters and extended power outages. The technology will support emergency operations, improve community safety, and help ensure families continue to have access to critical information and services when they need them most.
"This partnership is about more than equipment or programs," said Micah Nicholas, Executive Director of Red Cross Louisiana Capital Area-West Chapter. "It's about building local capacity, supporting trusted community leaders, and ensuring families have the resources and knowledge they need to stay safe."
Both organizations are deeply rooted in the belief that preparedness, education, and community engagement create stronger neighborhoods and better outcomes for families facing emergencies. The investment reflects the year-round Red Cross commitment to serving communities before, during, and after disasters.
“Our partnership with the American Red Cross aligns perfectly with our vision to make Gardere a safe and healthy community for all its residents. Safety extends beyond violence prevention to preparedness for natural disasters, apartment fires, and health emergencies,” said Dr. Murelle Harrison, Executive Director of the Gardere Initiative
By expanding our capacity and training in lifesaving measures, we can better serve our neighbors and strengthen the community’s trust in the Gardere Initiative and the American Red Cross.
The technology donation is just one part of a broader initiative focused on creating a more resilient Gardere community through volunteer engagement, emergency preparedness, community leadership, and access to lifesaving skills.
Through collaboration with the Gardere Initiative and Hands Over Heart, 50 young people received practical training in how to respond during a cardiac emergency. Participants learned how to recognize when someone may need assistance, call 911, and perform chest compressions until professional responders arrive.
Beyond the technical skills, the training provided something equally important: confidence.
By working alongside organizations that already have strong relationships with local families and youth, the training became more than a one-time educational program. It demonstrated what community mobilization looks like in practice. These 50 youth now carry lifesaving knowledge back to their homes, schools, and neighborhoods, expanding the number of people who are prepared to respond when every second counts.
Following Tropical Storm Arthur, youth volunteers from the Gardere Initiative joined Red Cross teams to help clean and sanitize cots that had been used to support disaster response operations. While the task may have happened behind the scenes, it played an important role in preparing equipment for future emergency sheltering efforts.
The volunteer effort offered participants a firsthand look at disaster response while reinforcing the importance of service, teamwork, and community responsibility. It also demonstrated that resilience is built in many different ways, from emergency preparedness training to the practical work required to support disaster operations.
By engaging youth directly in volunteer activities, the partnership helps cultivate the next generation of community leaders while giving young people meaningful opportunities to contribute to the well-being of their neighbors.
Together, the American Red Cross and the Gardere Initiative are proving that preparedness is more than a plan for disasters. It is an ongoing investment in people, relationships, and communities, ensuring that when challenges arise, neighbors are ready to support one another and emerge stronger than before.
