Twenty community leaders gave up a Saturday morning so that, if the worst ever happens, they would be prepared.
[NEW ORLEANS, LA] — A heart can stop without warning. In a school hallway. At a community meeting. In the middle of an ordinary afternoon. When it does, the person who saves a life is rarely a doctor. It is almost always the neighbor, teacher or volunteer who happens to be standing closest, and who knows what to do.
On a quiet Saturday morning this past October, twenty people chose to become that person. They filled a classroom at the Red Cross Louisiana headquarters: educators, advocates and community leaders from United Way of Southeast Louisiana, St. Mary's Academy, the Junior League of New Orleans and Heart N Hands. They came from different organizations with different missions. But as they knelt beside training manikins and counted out compressions together, they shared a single purpose: making sure the students, families and neighbors who count on them never face a cardiac emergency alone.
By the end of the morning, everyone earned free adult and pediatric CPR and AED certification.
Stronger Together, Neighborhood by Neighborhood
The training is part of the American Red Cross Community Adaptation Program (CAP), built on a simple belief: the people who know a community best are the ones already serving it. Across Southeast Louisiana, local nonprofits are lifelines. They feed families, house neighbors, support mental and physical health, and show up long after the news cameras leave. They also know that disaster risk and everyday health struggles often land on the same doorsteps. Through CAP, the Red Cross stands shoulder to shoulder with these trusted partners, helping them grow stronger so they can keep doing the work their communities depend on.
"Community resilience is built through partnerships together with the trusted local organizations that serve our families day in and day out,” said Kenneth A. St. Charles, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Louisiana Region. “When we equip our partners with lifesaving CPR skills and tools like AEDs, we are placing a protective shield directly into communities. Our goal is to ensure no one feels helpless when an emergency happens."
Heart N Hands: When Prevention Meets the Moment
For the team from Heart N Hands, this training hit close to home.
Heart N Hands spends each day teaching young women and girls how to protect their hearts: how to eat well, stay active and prevent cardiovascular disease before it starts. Their work is about the long game. But on that Saturday, they practiced for the moment no one plans for, when prevention isn't enough and a heart needs help right now.
"At Heart N Hands, our mission centers on teaching women and young girls how to care for their cardiovascular health and prevent disease before it starts,” said Essence Banks, Founder and CEO, Heart N Hands. “Attending the Red Cross class gave our team the hands-on capability to act when prevention turns into an immediate emergency. Knowing how to perform CPR turns fear into prompt, decisive action. It's an invaluable gift that reinforces what we stand for."
That shift, from fear to action, is the heart of this work. Every person who leaves a Red Cross class carries it with them.
Every Minute Matters
Skills save lives. So do the tools that make it possible.
Each year in the United States, more than 350,000 people suffer sudden cardiac arrest outside a hospital. For every minute that passes without defibrillation, their chance of survival drops by roughly 10%. In those minutes, a trained neighbor and a nearby AED can mean the difference between a funeral and a homecoming.
That's why the Red Cross’ Community Adaptation Program pairs training with lifesaving equipment. St. Mary's Academy, the Junior League of New Orleans and St. Louis Cathedral each recently received a free automated external defibrillator (AED) through the program.
At St. Mary's Academy, that AED, and a campus community trained to use it, brings peace of mind to hundreds of young women, their teachers and the families who walk through its doors. At the Junior League, it stands ready in spaces that welcome volunteers, civic meetings and community programs all year long. And in the heart of the French Quarter, St. Louis Cathedral's new AED will be within reach of parishioners and the thousands of tourists and visitors who step inside to worship, pray or simply take in its beauty.
A Safer Louisiana, One Hand and One Heart at a Time
By meeting organizations where they are, covering the cost of certification, providing equipment and building lasting relationships, the American Red Cross Louisiana Region and its partners are creating something bigger than any single class: a culture of everyday readiness.
It lives in a school hallway. In a youth wellness workshop. In a line at a community resource distribution. And it lives in twenty people who now know that, if a heart stops in front of them, their hands can help it start again. Across Southeast Louisiana, the people who serve their neighbors are ready to answer the call.
