The Red Cross Rally for Relief Tennis Tournament was a powerful, mission-driven event that raised critical funds, community awareness, and lifesaving support for our neighbors in crisis. This unique tournament, hosted in Shreveport, Louisiana, combined fun filled tennis with heartfelt humanitarian purpose, setting a new bar for what a community fundraiser can achieve.
Held to support the North Louisiana Chapter of the American Red Cross, the Rally for Relief raised funds for local disaster response efforts. These funds directly support the Red Cross’s ability to provide shelter, financial assistance, emotional support, and recovery services to families impacted by disasters. What most don't realize is that single-family fires are our number one disaster, and we respond to them multiple times each week in our chapter. This need is especially urgent in Shreveport, where Shreveport is listed #2 in the nation with the highest home fire risk according to Hartford’s 2023 Home Fire Index. The success of this tournament helps ensure the Red Cross can continue to respond swiftly and compassionately when our neighbors need us most.
Beyond dollars, the event ignited widespread awareness about the mission of the Red Cross. The tournament venue was transformed into a visual experience that immersed players and guests in the world of disaster response. Our Emergency Response Vehicle was on display surrounded by cots, blankets, and disaster relief supplies, giving attendees a powerful peek into how we serve communities in their darkest hours.
Celebrating Red Cross month
To celebrate March is Red Cross Month, Saturday was designated a “Red Out” Day, encouraging everyone to wear red in support of our mission. The tournament officially kicked off Friday night with an exhibition match featuring some of Shreveport’s top tennis talent, followed by an incredible weekend of play and festivities.
Saturday night’s Hit for Prizes added a competitive twist with great prizes including:
Winner’s gifts were creative and mission-inspired - fun umbrellas highlighting the weekend’s central theme of storm response and preparedness.
The weekend was thoughtfully planned, with:
Community involvement was strong, with generous support from local businesses such as Swepco, Bayou Outdoor Supercenter, Eagle Distributing, Bass Fine Jewelry, Thrash Construction, and Origin Bank to name a few, helping us connect the mission to every corner of our region.
To build excitement and engagement, we launched a dedicated social media presence weeks before the tournament. Content included sponsor shoutouts, registration updates, schedule of events, Hit for Prizes info detailing gifts up for grabs, and real-time weekend coverage from the matches to the parties to the impact.
What It All Means
At its core, the Rally for Relief asked one simple question: What if your weekend could matter?
Shreveport answered — loudly.
None of it would have been possible without the people who showed up. To every player who stepped onto the court, every sponsor who invested in the mission, and every volunteer who gave their time and energy behind the scenes: thank you. You didn't just make a tournament happen. You made a difference. The families who will receive shelter on a sleepless night, a hot meal after losing everything in a disaster, or a calm voice in the middle of chao, they are the real scoreboard of the weekend. And because of you, that scoreboard looks very, very good.
The funds raised will keep the Red Cross ready to support the next family standing in front of the rubble of their home, ready to offer a cot, a meal, and the assurance that they are not alone. In a city that carries the weight of real disaster risk, that readiness isn't optional. It's everything.
But the work doesn't end after the match.
The Red Cross runs on the dedication of volunteers, ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things for their neighbors. Whether it's responding to a 3 a.m. house fire, teaching a CPR class, or helping a displaced family navigate recovery, volunteers are the heartbeat of this mission. Right now, the North Louisiana Chapter is looking for people just like you.
