Montana Red Cross board member Craig Stahlberg recently received the University of Montana’s Outstanding Student Volunteer award. This award salutes an outstanding individual who has volunteered time, energy and resources to making a lasting impact to an organization.
A UM graduate student, Stahlberg has served on the Red Cross board since 2016 and is chair of the Biomedical Services Committee. He also helps support the organization’s Community Volunteer Leader program and in 2019 was recognized nationally by the American Red Cross as a Presidential Award for Excellence finalist for his outstanding service.
“Craig is a compassionate volunteer dedicated to improving the lives of Montanans,” Montana Red Cross Executive Director Diane Wright said. “He uses his network to identify new partnerships to strengthen our organization and embraces diversity and inclusiveness in everything he does. Craig is creative and challenges our staff and board members to seek new ideas and uses his knowledge gained through his graduate studies to find better ways to serve.”
Stahlberg first volunteered with the Red Cross after he and his son attended a home fire safety event in Missoula, helping install free smoke alarms in homes. His family ties to the humanitarian organization go deep as his mother was a biomedical nurse.
“I am humbled to be selected by the University of Montana to receive this award,” Stahlberg said. “I would like to thank the great team at the Montana Chapter of the American Red Cross for nominating me. Giving blood through the Red Cross has been a long tradition in my family, making this recognition even more special.”
Before becoming a full-time UM student, Stahlberg spent more than 30 years as a controller, chief financial officer and vice president of finance in the insurance industry. He is currently pursuing a Masters of Science degree in business analytics. He and his wife Julie have two sons and live in Missoula.
