As summer approaches, stay safe at the pool

February 18, 2021. Atlantis Aquaventure waterpark, Nassau, Bahamas. The Bahamas Red Cross has officially added “Lifeguard Certification and Instructor Training” to its repertoire of lifesaving skills courses. Supported and funded by the American Red Cross, the Bahamas Red Cross trained a class of instructors of the new lifeguarding course which will be offered throughout the Bahamas. Around a dozen people made up the first class coming from New Providence, Abaco, Exuma and Grand Bahama.

The new course is a collaboration between the Bahamas Red Cross and American Red Cross which has set up a delegation in the Bahamas to support long-term recovery work following Hurricane Dorian. This new program is just one of many new additions to the wide-reaching work of the Red Cross to help people affected by Hurricane Dorian and improve the lives of the Bahamian community as a whole.

As summer approaches, lifeguarding training will help you and loved ones stay safe--and potentially lead to employment opportunities.

In the United States, 3,500 to 4,000 people die every year from drowning.This equates to more than 10 drownings per day.

As alarming as this sounds, this doesn't compare to hearing the tragic stories of family members who lost loved ones in this manner.To prevent one more life lost, we must step up and take action to ensure that these heartbreaking moments will never happen to your friends, your family members, and your loved ones.

The American Red Cross offers vital safety training through our lifeguarding program. This program trains lifeguards to act with speed and confidence in emergency situations both in and out of the water.

The topics covered in this program include:

water rescue skills,
surveillance and recognition,
first aid,
breathing and cardiac emergencies,
cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR),
automated external defibrillator (AED), and more.

In addition to this wonderful lifeguarding program, one can also prevent another drowning by following these vital safety tips:

Supervision – Make sure to have a responsible person supervise the pool area when people are in the pool.
Swimming lessons – Take swimming lessons from a trained professional.
CPR lessons – Learning CPR will give a person a better chance of surviving a potential drowning accident
Proper fencing – Installing fencing around the pool can prevent any type of drowning accidents, especially with younger children.
Avoid alcohol – Too much alcohol can impair judgement and create an unnecessary risk when it comes to being near a pool.

Thanks to the lifeguarding program and these important safety tips, we all can enjoy a wonderful time this Summer, knowing how to be prepared for any drowning emergency. After all, the loss of one life is one too many.
