LAS VEGAS (Oct. 16, 2025) — A trained disaster relief volunteer from the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada deployed this morning to Anchorage, Alaska, to help shelter more than 2,000 people displaced by severe flooding caused by Typhoon Halong. The Southern Nevada volunteer joins hundreds of Red Cross responders nationwide on 21-day deployments to provide critical emergency support.
“When disaster strikes, the American Red Cross answers the call, no matter where help is needed,” said Rachel Flanigan, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter. “Our volunteers are dedicated to providing comfort, shelter and hope to those impacted by the devastating flooding in Alaska, helping them take the first steps toward rebuilding their lives and communities.”
Devastating Damage in Western Alaska
The remnants of Typhoon Halong pummeled Alaska’s western coast this week, bringing extreme winds that toppled homes and storm surges that inundated villages. Two remote communities, Kipnuk and Kwigillingok, were among the hardest hit and are accessible only by air or sea. Residents were rescued by helicopter and transported to a shelter in Bethel, where Red Cross disaster relief volunteers provided immediate assistance.
Evacuees are now being airlifted 400 miles to Anchorage. The American Red Cross is working closely with local, state and tribal officials to provide safe shelter, meals, emergency relief supplies, emotional support and health services.
Veteran Red Cross of Southern Nevada volunteer Tammy Brandl, of Pahrump, flew to Anchorage this morning to assist with emergency sheltering efforts. Brandl, who has deployed nearly 30 times to support disaster relief, brings extensive experience and compassion to her role.
“As Red Cross volunteers, we are driven by a deep commitment to help people in their moments of greatest need,” said Flanigan. “Providing comfort, hope and support to those affected by disasters is not just what we do—it’s who we are. Standing with communities during their toughest times is both an honor and a responsibility we take to heart.”
