The American Red Cross in Greater New York is proud to celebrate the success of the 2026 Sound the Alarm campaign. Now in its 12^th year, this life-saving initiative brings together volunteers, community partners and residents to help prevent home fire tragedies across the region.

From May 2 through June 8, 2026, Red Cross volunteers installed free smoke alarms, shared critical fire safety information and helped families create home fire escape plans. Through events in communities including Yonkers, Queens, Manorville, the Bronx and Babylon, volunteers worked side-by-side with local fire departments, elected officials and partners to help make homes safer.

The results are remarkable: Volunteers installed 2,944 free smoke alarms in 830 homes, helping protect 2,412 people from the devastating effects of home fires.

Home fires remain the most frequent disaster to which the Red Cross responds. Every 10 minutes, Red Cross teams are helping people affected by a home fire somewhere in the United States. Here in the Greater New York Region, between July 1 and May 31, Red Cross disaster teams responded to more than 1,700 home fires and other emergencies, providing support to 4,675 people through financial assistance, health and mental health services, emergency supplies, and compassionate care.
