In 1939, he immigrated to Canada as a war refugee escaping Nazi occupied Austria. De Weldon then became a United States citizen after completing military service in the U.S. Navy, where he quickly made a name for himself as a Naval artist. His most recognizable work is the iconic Marine Corps War Memorial, commonly known as the Iwo Jima Memorial. In addition to his celebrated works, de Weldon created a variety of other important sculptures, including a significant piece dedicated to the American Red Cross. The Red Cross Memorial, located in Washington, D.C., serves as a tribute to the selfless service and humanitarian efforts of the organization during times of war and peace. Felix de Weldon passed away on June 3, 2003, but his contributions continue to resonate and remind us of the importance of humanitarian efforts in society.
