Hawthorne, N.Y. May 30, 2023 - In partnership with the Finkelstein Memorial Library, the American Red Cross Metro New York North Chapter will host “Prepare Spring Valley,” a day-long community event on Sunday, June 11, 2023, featuring safety courses, family readiness training, refreshments, prizes, and more. “Prepare Spring Valley” is free to the public and open to residents of all ages.
“At the American Red Cross, we know all too well the devastating impact that disasters like home fires and hurricanes, as well as other unexpected life events, can have on the communities we serve. That’s why community preparedness – which can minimize the impact of these emergencies – is such a priority for us,” said Stephanie Dunn Ashley, CEO, American Red Cross Metro New York North Chapter. “We are proud to partner with the Finkelstein Memorial Library, elected officials and community partners to bring a day of free Red Cross readiness training in multiple languages to more individuals and families.”

Be Red Cross Ready & HANDS-ONLY CPR
Hands-only CPR is a life-saving technique that involves chest compressions on a person who has suffered sudden cardiac arrest. This training provides a comprehensive overview on how to prepare for natural and man-made disasters, and how to respond to and recover from them. For kids and adults ages 13 and up.
International Humanitarian Law
Today armed conflicts are ongoing around the world. At times it may seem that there are no rules in war. Fortunately, there are rules in war, and they can make a difference. Even War Has Rules is a dynamic discussion of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and how it governs armed conflict. It will address topics such as: the sources of law and rules that apply to armed conflicts; the fundamental principles of IHL that guide the development of these rules; and how IHL protects people and places during armed conflicts.
FREE SMOKE ALARMS & HOME HEALTH VISITS
Teams from the American Red Cross Home Fire Program and the Rockland County Department of Health will visit homes to provide a health check and install provide a fire safety visit, including the installation of FREE smoke alarms by trained Red Cross volunteers.
