HAWTHORNE, N.Y., April 28, 2022 — Spring Valley residents can sign up now for a free smoke alarm installation from the American Red Cross Metro NY North Chapter and local partners on May 7.
“Our goal is to save lives,” said Stephanie Dunn Ashley, CEO, American Red Cross Metro NY North Chapter. “As an organization that responds to home fires every week in Westchester County, Rockland County, and Greenwich, Conn., we at the American Red Cross know all too well the devastating impact of these all-too-common disasters. That’s why we want to make sure everyone has working smoke alarms, which can cut the risk of dying in a home fire by half.”
Residents who need assistance can visit www.soundthealarm.org/mnyn to schedule an appointment for a free smoke alarm installation during the Red Cross Sound the Alarm event on May 7, 2022. During the 20-minute home visits, Red Cross volunteers will also share information on the causes of home fires, how to prevent them, what to do if a fire starts and how to create an escape plan.
“Most people don’t realize they only have two minutes to escape a home fire — and that smoke alarms need to be replaced every 10 years,” Dunn Ashley said. “Taking action with this knowledge can be the difference between survival and tragedy.”
The American Red Cross Metro NY North Chapter Joins National SOUND THE ALARM Effort!
This Sound the Alarm event is part of a national Red Cross initiative in May to install 50,000 free smoke alarms with partners in more than 50 at-risk communities across the country. Sound the Alarm events are a critical part of the national Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, which has helped save at least 1275 lives nationally since launching in October 2014. As part of the campaign, the American Red Cross Metro NY North Chapter and local partners have installed more than 6,700 free smoke alarms and made more than 2,700 households safer in Westchester County, Rockland County, and Greenwich, Conn.
This May, the Red Cross will be in and around Spring Valley, a community that experienced a huge fire this March that forced dozens from their homes, to install free smoke alarms and provide fire safety education. However, any local resident in Westchester County, Rockland County, and Greenwich, Conn. can sign up for a free smoke alarm installation by visiting www.soundthealarm.org/mnyn.
