Thousands of people will flock to Philadelphia this summer for FIFA World Cup matches, Major League Baseball All-Star festivities and Wawa Welcome America celebrations. Large crowds, combined with high summer temperatures, can create dangerous conditions, especially during long periods of standing, walking and outdoor activities.
“Philadelphia will be filled incredible energy and excitement as we welcome visitors for these major events, but extreme heat can quickly turn dangerous if people aren’t prepared,” said Jennifer Graham, CEO, American Red Cross Southeastern Pennsylvania Region. “We’re urging everyone — whether you’re a lifelong resident or first-time visitor — to stay hydrated, take breaks in cooler areas and download our free Red Cross Emergency and First Aid apps so this summer remains both memorable and safe.”
Why Extreme Heat is a Serious Risk
Extreme heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in the United States. Last year ranked among the warmest on record globally, and forecasters expect above-average temperatures across much of the U.S. again this summer. Dense crowds, prolonged outdoor exposure, long transit times and limited access to shade amplify the risk of heat-related illness.
