As climate change intensifies, so does the threat of extreme heat, a silent, deadly force that claims more lives annually than hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes combined. That’s why Heat Action Day (June 2) is so important.
This global initiative raises awareness and encourages everyone to take lifesaving actions before and during heat waves. This year’s spotlight is on recognizing and responding to heat stroke, a medical emergency that can cause brain damage, organ failure, or death if untreated.
Know the signs of heat stroke
What to do: Call 911 immediately; move the person to a cooler place, and use cool cloths or a bath to bring down body temperature. Do not give them anything to drink.
