Jim Fynes is a humanitarian hero who would not be denied his privilege to volunteer. Before the American Red Cross, he did so at a non-profit organization formerly known as the Don Guanella School, which provided both employment and structure to cognitively challenged adults. Don Guanella had hosted Jim to volunteer and support the workers.
However, a state audit circa 2018-2019 brought about a change in policy: only paid staff can be on site to help. There would be no volunteering – from Jim, his colleagues or anyone else. Just like that, Jim was out of his volunteer gig in which he made his rounds to greet and boost the team.
Enter the Red Cross, with a 90% volunteer constituency. Jim found another niche in the world of volunteering. This time it would be the forever-endorsed kind of volunteerism. Now a six-year experienced volunteer, Jim is found throughout Delaware County blood drives where he meets many people. In fact, some of the blood donors knew Jim as far back as college and even high school. (While we’re on the topic of friendly folks, Jim gives a shout-out to Paul, Nativity BVM’s caretaker in West Grove, PA.)
When something happens once, there is greater chance of it happening again. Jim received the 2024 volunteer award – again. Like he did in his first year with the Red Cross, Jim collected the Delaware County Blood Donor Ambassador Award. Two shout-outs to Jim.
Jim came to volunteer and stayed for the people. He finds his fellow Red Cross volunteers have hearts of gold. Jim also trains new volunteers to serve as Blood Drive Ambassadors. On March 8, Jim and many colleagues celebrated his most recent award at Llanerch Country Club in Havertown, PA.
