Understanding the dangers of lightning

Lightning is unpredictable and deadly. It can strike miles away from a storm and travel through ground, metal, and even plumbing. Each year, hundreds of people in the U.S. are injured or killed by lightning-related incidents. The key to staying safe is awareness and preparation.

• When thunder roars, go indoors. If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck.
• Avoid open fields, tall objects, and water during a thunderstorm.
• Stay away from windows, plumbing, and electrical equipment during a storm.

Staying safe outdoors

Outdoor activities are especially risky during a thunderstorm. Whether you’re hiking, playing sports, or working, having a lightning safety plan can make a difference.

• Always check the weather forecast before heading outside.
• Have a shelter option nearby—fully enclosed buildings are best.
• Avoid high ground and metal objects like fences, poles, and bikes.

Staying safe indoors

Many people are surprised to learn that lightning injuries can also occur inside the home. When lightning strikes a building, it can travel through wiring, plumbing, and even metal window frames. That’s why it’s important to avoid anything that conducts electricity while indoors during a storm.

• Do not touch anything plugged into an outlet.
• Avoid sinks, bathtubs, and other plumbing.
• Use cordless or cell phones instead of corded ones.
• Stay away from windows and exterior doors.
• Avoid lying on garage or concrete floors, which may conduct electricity.
