Volunteer FAQ
A. To become a volunteer, please start by completing a volunteer application and completing the required steps including background check, reading and agree to Red Cross polies, and signing up for a one-on-one interview with our volunteer services team to discuss the best position for you within the Red Cross.
A. Adult volunteers must be at least 18 years old. A variety of opportunities may be available for Youth volunteers ages 13 to 17. Check out our Youth Opportunities page for more information or contact us at utnv.volunteer@redcross.org.
A. Once you have completed the application process and background check, a Volunteer Services team member will contact you to discuss volunteer opportunities and together you will determine a match. Consider how much time you are interested in dedicating, your skills, and talents, where you are willing to volunteer, and what your schedule is.
A. Time commitments vary according to the area in which you choose to volunteer. Many volunteers work regular weekly or monthly shifts. Others choose to maintain their training and respond only to major disasters. Although our need for volunteers is greatest during weekdays, many evening and weekend opportunities are also available. Take a look at our volunteer opportunities to determine which opportunities best fit in your schedule.
A. Background checks have been an area of focus at the American Red Cross and encouraged for many years. The Red Cross continues to reaffirm our accountability to the American public. Background checks help us achieve a more efficient and safer work environment for our employees and volunteers. Volunteers under the age of 18 are not required to complete a background check.
A. Yes! Our volunteer opportunities vary which enables some volunteers to work from home or in the field. When applying for positions you can search for virtual or remote opportunities that may fit your interests.
A. The first step to becoming a Red Cross Disaster Responder is to apply using our volunteer management system Volunteer Connection. You will be required to create a profile, complete an application and submit a background check. Upon receipt of your background check and application, you will be contacted by a Volunteer Services team member to discuss next steps.
A. Yes, although you must have experience with disaster response as a local Red Cross volunteer and be able to dedicate a minimum of two weeks to your assignment. To acquire that experience, you must register, complete training, and serve with your local chapter. Most volunteers choose to put their skills in practice by working on their local county’s Disaster Action Team, responding to the local disasters that occur every day in our community.
A. The American Red Cross provides assistance during international disasters upon the request of that country’s Red Cross or Red Crescent society. Typically, there are very few volunteers deployed internationally and they are specially trained to manage international emergency operations. Please consider supporting your community’s needs by volunteering with your local American Red Cross chapter.
