On Sunday January 22, in response to the last of a three-storm event impacting Southern California, the Red Cross Los Angeles Region opened four emergency evacuation shelters. The storm, which is expected to continue through tonight, caused flooding in urban areas that resulted in numerous road closures and forced residents to evacuate from homes surrounding the recent burn areas-- where the risk of mudslides and floating debris pose a danger to life and property.
In the Santa Clarita Valley, residents evacuated due to potential life-threatening mud and debris flow stemming from the area surrounding the Sand Fire burn scar. Similarly, residents of the City of Duarte were forced to evacuate from locations surrounding the Fish Fire burn scar. And, in Wilmington, residents were forced to evacuate due to wide-spread urban flooding. Additionally, an avalanche in Mono County left many residents displaced in the Mammoth Lakes area and the Red Cross Los Angeles Region opened a shelter at a nearby community center to accommodate their needs as well.
All four shelters will remain open until law enforcement allows residents to return to their homes.
The shelters are located at:
Canyon High School
19300 Nadal St,
Santa Clarita, CA 91351
Duarte Community Center
1600 Huntington Drive
Duarte, CA 91010
Wilmington Recreation Center
325 N Neptune Avenue
Wilmington, CA 90744
Crowley Lake Community Center
474-, 482 S Landling Rd,
Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546
