Volunteer Medical Screener
The Volunteer Medical Screeners will use their education, professional skills, training, and/or experience to support blood collection screening and consequently, patients who need blood and blood products by screening and examining blood donor candidates to approve or defer for health concerns.
Red Cross Volunteer Medical Screeners will support Blood Service activities, by competently and professionally working with blood donors to assure that they are in good health and meet eligibility guidelines. The Medical Screener will augment collections employee activities by performing donor registration, taking vital signs, and recording health histories. Medical Screeners will use their education, professional skills and experience to assist blood donors through the collections process. Active, retired and new health professionals will have the opportunity to practice and maintain their skills while learning regulated procedures.
Volunteer Medical Screeners will perform all duties and responsibilities in compliance with standard operating procedures, Safety Quality Identity Potency Purity (SQuIPP), regulations outlined in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and other applicable Federal, state and local regulations.
Collect and confirm donor demographics

Conduct physical exam, to include oral temperature, pulse, BP and hematocrit by accepted process
Facilitate and evaluate health history (typically self-administered by donor)
Comply with applicable Federal, State and local regulations as well as all American Red Cross policies, procedures and guidelines
Diligently check email, attend relevant meetings, skill competency assessments, and updates to ensure skills are kept current at all times
Being punctual and dependable for all assignments
The duties are representative of the essential functions of the position. Physical requirements are those present in normal office environment including handling computer equipment, walking through or between offices and phlebotomy beds. Operational flexibility is required to meet sudden and unpredictable needs.
Willingness to support Red Cross Mission
Customer service experience, effective verbal communication, and public relations skills are required
Experience working in a regulated medical environment preferred: Medical Assistant, RN, LPN, or other medical experience strongly preferred
Must be able to follow Standard Operating Procedure instructions and training
Basic computer skills required
HS diploma or equivalent
Minimum 2 blood drive shifts per month. Flexible business hours available, could include evenings or weekends.
Get behind the wheel and deliver life-saving blood to area hospitals. Safe, responsible motorists with strong customer service skills are needed to help ensure that patients can continue their fight against life-threatening illnesses. Local round-trip delivery routes operate out of Pomona and Culver City 7 days a week.
Distribute blood to area hospitals as routine or "stat" deliveries using a Red Cross vehicle for the duration of the shift. Pick up and return boxes as needed. Complete required paperwork and obtain signatures. Communicate and share feedback between Red Cross personnel and customers. Drive in a safe and responsible manner and provide strong customer service at all times.

As the face of Red Cross blood drives, you'll welcome and check-in donors, ensure they read pre-donation materials, offer promotional items when available, and ensure that everyone has a positive experience in a clean environment – and grab a cookie and a drink before they depart.

One 6-hour shift per month for 6 months.

Use your time and talent to save lives. California regulations require that any time blood is drawn under a license it must be under the supervision of a physician. When a physician isn’t available, a volunteer RN with current license, trained on Red Cross procedures is needed to act in this capacity.
California regulations require that any time blood is drawn under a license (for example under the Red Cross license) – it must be under the supervision of a physician or a registered nurse trained in the procedure. The regulations allow for scenarios where a physician is not present (which would be typical for blood drives in California), however, the regulations require that when a physician is not present – the individual placed in charge must be a Registered Nurse.
Red Cross Solution: A Volunteer RN with current license, trained on Red Cross procedures pertaining to donor eligibility and donor reaction management, can act in this capacity. Job duties include:
Oversight of donor eligibility and donor reactions
Observe donors post-donation
Encourage donors to use RapidPass
Educate donors on best donation type for their blood type
Build relationships/recruit volunteers
Hours range but to attend an entire duration of a blood drive (until the last donor leaves hospitality): 2 or more blood drives per month for 6 months or more, commitment.
