A community gathers not just to donate blood, but to celebrate the remarkable life and legacy of Dante Longo.

A Legacy Remembered
On Sunday, August 10, 2025, the lobby of Springhill Suites by Marriott in Chula Vista was filled not only with blood donors but with love, laughter, and memories. The American Red Cross partnered with the Longo family to host the “In Memory of Dante Longo Blood Drive,” a heartfelt event dedicated to honoring the life and legacy of a young man whose spirit continues to inspire.
“Instead of crying on his birthday, we choose to celebrate his life.” – Gabrielle Brie Longo
Carrying on Dante’s Impact
“We are having this blood drive with the Red Cross to carry on Dante’s impact in the world,” shared Dante’s sister, Gabrielle Brie Longo. “Back in 2018, he was in a coma and needed blood donations to survive. We had him for four more years because of those donors. This is our way of ensuring other families get that same gift of time.”
Her words echoed the powerful truth of blood donation: each unit can save more than one life.
Perseverance on and off the Field
Dante’s father, Charles Longo, reflected on his son’s enduring drive. “His perseverance was something to admire. Dante loved soccer and received many awards—most persistent, most improved—always playing with humor and love for his teammates. He never stopped giving his best, even when life challenged him.”
“Dante was afraid of needles, but he still donated blood. So don’t be afraid—someone needs your help right now.” – Charles Longo
Dante's friends celebrate his life by donating lifesaving blood.
A Leader, a Friend, a Brother
For his mother, Brie Kim Longo, Dante’s legacy shines brightest in how he treated others. “He was always everyone’s best friend. His spirit was indomitable, his humor unforgettable. On the field, he was a leader; off the field, he was someone who made everyone feel special.”
Friendships forged in childhood carried through to this day. Cory Prenatt, a lifelong friend, donated blood at the event and reflected on their bond. “We didn’t even like each other at first,” he laughed, “but life kept bringing us back together. Dante was genuine, reliable, and always had something funny to say. Being around him made you feel like the best version of yourself.”
An Overwhelming Success
By the end of the day, the drive exceeded all expectations. The Red Cross projected 25 units, but thanks to the dedication of the community and Dante’s loved ones, 36 units of blood were collected—144% of the goal—with 31 donors stepping forward. Some donors even gave Power Reds, which allows you to safely donate two units of red blood cells during one donation, providing double the impact.
A Legacy of Strength and Service
The blood drive underscored a powerful truth: one person’s legacy can ripple outward to touch countless lives. Through the Longo Strong Foundation, Dante’s family continues to promote fitness, mental resilience, and community wellness. The annual blood drive ensures that even in his absence, Dante remains a source of hope.
“Your donation gives families life to their loved ones,” his mother reminded. “Dante’s full recovery after his accident was possible because of blood donors. We share his story to inspire others to help—because helping others was who Dante was.”
As donors left the hotel that Sunday afternoon, many carried with them not just a Red Cross bandage but a renewed sense of connection. They came to honor Dante, but they also left having given life. In the words of his family and friends, Dante’s existence keeps impacting people’s lives—and will for generations to come.
