Patrick Konczal was able to surprise his parents at a Red Cross event in Fairfax, Virginia, just in time for the holidays.

In a room filled with holiday music and Red Cross volunteers signing cards for service members, Pfc. Patrick Konczal waited, moments away from seeing his family for the first time in 18 months.
His parents were unaware that Konczal had spent the last day and a half traveling from South Korea to Fairfax, Virginia, thanks to United Airlines. When they stepped into the room expecting to volunteer with the Red Cross and saw their son, emotion washed over them, eyes filling with tears.
“This was such a wonderful surprise, especially this time of year,” said Konczal’s father, Michael. “To see him here, and for you all to help make this happen, is just wonderful, we can’t thank you enough.”
“I don’t even know how to describe the excitement seeing him,” said Konczal’s sister, Morgan. “It didn’t feel real.”
Konczal has been serving overseas at Camp Casey since summer 2024. Last year marked his first Christmas away from his close-knit family, and his absence was felt. This year’s reunion carries even more weight, as his mother was recently diagnosed with cancer. Konczal can still remember the moment he heard the news about his mom’s diagnosis.
“It stung,” he said, “It was like a punch to the heart.”
Now, Konczal will spend the holidays holding his loved ones close.
“None of this would have happened without the Red Cross,” Konczal said. “It means the world to me. I’m eternally grateful.”
