John McKinnon brings more than 20 years of leadership experience in nonprofit and business management. Prior to joining the South Florida American Red Cross Region, John served as Executive Director of Midwest Food Bank’s Florida Division, where he led a team of staff and volunteers that distributed over 16 million pounds of food annually to more than 230 nonprofit partners, while also providing emergency relief in response to natural disasters.
Before his time at Midwest Food Bank, John served as Executive Director for several Adult & Teen Challenge chapters across the United States, including locations in Michigan, Florida, and Missouri. In these roles, he advanced organizational growth, financial stability, and program expansion, while overseeing large-scale community outreach and recovery programs. John has also participated in/coordinated disaster response efforts for nine major hurricanes, including Hurricanes Ian, Michael, Irma, and Maria, among others. His career experience also includes international service projects in Malaysia, the Philippines, Costa Rica, and Nicaragua, broadening his leadership perspective in diverse cultural settings.
Originally from Muskegon, Michigan, John has lived in six states and has called Southwest Florida home since 2015. He married his wife, Rachel, in 2007, and together they have two children, Nolan and Natalie.
