For Melany Suarez Ibarra, volunteering with the American Red Cross is about more than the hours she gives, it’s about the people she reaches and the purpose behind every act of service.
As Internal Vice President of the American Red Cross South Florida Region Youth Executive Board, Melany has become a dedicated leader and advocate for young volunteers across the region. Her Red Cross journey has included serving as a South Region Club Coordinator and Youth Volunteer Orientation Leader, where she has helped mentor new volunteers, support club leaders and strengthen youth engagement throughout South Florida.
“Volunteering with the Red Cross has taught me to measure my contribution through impact: the people that it reaches and the purpose it serves,” Melany said. “Every role gives youth a way to support a mission much larger than ourselves, and through our youth programs, I’ve found a profound meaning in helping other young people recognize how much they can actually contribute when they’re equipped.”
During Hispanic Heritage Month, Melany also reflects on how her Cuban heritage has shaped the way she thinks about community and service.
“Through my Cuban roots, I know how support, like the one the American Red Cross provides, can uplift communities,” she said. “Because of that, helping volunteers allows me to bring that part of myself into my service.”
That commitment can be seen in the countless hours Melany has dedicated to supporting Red Cross clubs, assisting volunteers, facilitating orientations and building stronger youth engagement; all while balancing academics, extracurricular activities and other leadership commitments.
For Melany, those experiences are also helping shape what service will look like in her future.
“The Red Cross has helped me understand how to turn my desire to help into meaningful action, so as I explore ways to serve people in Cuba, I’m carrying forward what volunteering has taught me about becoming someone others can count on.”
As the Red Cross celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month, Melany’s story is a reminder of the powerful role young volunteers play in strengthening our communities. Bringing their culture, experiences and passion for service with them every step of the way.
