When Mercedes Urbina of Hialeah first looked outside her home and saw massive clouds of smoke rising in the distance, she knew something was wrong. Within a short time, smoke began making its way inside her home, creating an unsettling and dangerous situation for her and her 25-year-old son.
As the brush fire conditions worsened, Mercedes was ordered to evacuate from her home and seek safety at the American Red Cross shelter operating at the Miami-Dade County Fairgrounds. There, she and her son found more than just a safe place to stay, they found compassion, comfort and support during an uncertain time.
Now, as she reflects on the past several days, Mercedes says she is overwhelmed by the care she has received. “I have no words,” she said when describing the support provided by the Red Cross. Mercedes shared that her experience at the shelter has been wonderful and filled with love and care from the volunteers who have been there every step of the way. “I couldn't be happier,” she said. “They've treated us so well.”
Throughout their stay, Mercedes and her son have had access to meals, comfort items and support services. According to Mercedes, food and other necessities have been provided “in abundance,” helping ease the stress and uncertainty that often follow a disaster. While grateful to be safe, Mercedes knows challenges remain ahead. When she returns home, she will be faced with the difficult task of cleaning up after the fire. She has already noticed ash covering her vehicle and many of her belongings, a visible reminder of how quickly conditions changed as smoke moved into her neighborhood. Still, she remains focused on the kindness she has experienced during a difficult time.
Red Cross volunteers have worked around the clock to provide shelter, food, emotional support and other essential services to residents impacted by the Miami-Dade County brush fire. Working alongside local emergency management officials, volunteers continue helping families like Mercedes' find stability and comfort as they begin the recovery process.
The American Red Cross remains committed to supporting those affected by the brush fire and stands ready to provide additional assistance as needed. Individuals interested in supporting Red Cross Disaster Relief efforts can visit redcross.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS.
