The American Red Cross South Florida Region is actively supporting Miami-Dade County Emergency Management as wildfire conditions continue to impact portions of the community.
In coordination with local officials and response partners, the Red Cross has opened a shelter at the Main Gate Building at the Miami-Dade County Fairgrounds to provide a safe place for residents forced to leave their homes due to the brush fire. Overnight, the shelter welcomed seven residents and one cat seeking refuge from the fire and smoke conditions, and they remain open for those who have been affected. Trained Red Cross volunteers worked throughout the night to ensure shelter residents had access to food and comfort.
In addition to providing a safe place to stay, Red Cross volunteers are offering comfort care, emotional support and health services to those affected by the fire. As conditions continue to evolve, the Red Cross remains in close communication with Miami-Dade County Emergency Management and stands ready to expand services if additional support is needed.
The Red Cross encourages residents in affected areas to stay informed through trusted local officials and emergency management agencies, follow evacuation orders immediately if issued, and keep emergency supplies readily available. Folks can download the free Red Cross Emergency App to receive real-time alerts, weather warnings, shelter information and preparedness resources.
The American Red Cross responds to disasters large and small every day, providing shelter, food, relief supplies and hope to people facing some of their most difficult moments.
