In 2019, the Veteran Visitation Program was launched to honor the brave veterans who are patients in the healthcare facilities of Naples Community Hospital (NCH). The partnership between the Red Cross and NCH was established when the leadership from both organizations identified the need to honor the many veterans staying in NCH facilities at North Naples and downtown Baker hospitals.
The program is led by Red Cross volunteers, some of whom are veterans. Volunteers visit the patients to express their gratitude for their military service and engage in conversation about their experiences. New friendships are established, providing emotional support and companionship to the veterans.
Volunteers also provide essential information about Red Cross and Veterans Affairs services and programs catering to the needs of veterans.
One of the dedicated volunteers of the Veteran Visitation Program is David Wirsing. After his military service, David embarked on a career in the airline industry that took him to many places around the world. David's respect for the Red Cross grew during his time in Southeast Asia. His admiration for the organization and the Veteran Visitation Program led him to join the Red Cross.
Having the time and the ability to relate to these veterans, David enjoys participating in this program and plans to continue volunteering for as long as he can.
Being a part of this program provides a tremendous feeling of satisfaction and David enjoys giving back to those who have made this country great. David feels proud when he puts on the co-branded Red Cross and NCH shirt. He takes pride in being able to recognize and honor his fellow veterans.
The program is always received with smiles and appreciation from the veterans. The visits by Red Cross volunteers are a highlight of their hospital stay.
In conclusion, the Veteran Visitation Program is a remarkable initiative that not only honors the veterans for their service but also provides emotional support and companionship. The program has been beneficial not only for the veterans but also for the volunteers like David, who get a chance to give back to the community.
