March is American Red Cross Month, a time-honored tradition that dates back to 1943 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt first proclaimed the month as a period to recognize those who make our mission possible. Here in Louisiana, we are constantly moved by the selflessness of our neighbors, but this month, we are especially grateful for the partners who step up to champion our volunteers.
Recently, our Capital Area West Executive Director, Micah Nicholas, and local chapter volunteers visited the team at Unum. It was a visit defined by gratitude and a shared commitment to service.
In a world that moves fast, the employees at Unum took a meaningful moment to slow down and reflect on the impact of Red Cross humanitarian work. They crafted handwritten thank-you cards for our volunteers, sharing heartfelt words of appreciation for the compassion and time our teams dedicate to supporting neighbors in need.
“We are incredibly moved by the warmth and intentionality shown by the team at Unum,” said Micah Nicholas, Executive Director of the Red Cross Capital Area West chapter. “Seeing a local partner take the time to personally thank our volunteers reminds us that we aren't doing this work alone. However, the need for help never stops. We are always looking for more compassionate individuals to join our ranks and help us provide hope when it’s needed most.”
During the visit, Nicholas and the team also had the opportunity to discuss a critical pillar of the Red Cross mission, the Home Fire Campaign.
Many are surprised to learn that home fires are the most frequent disaster the Red Cross responds to—not just annually, but every single day. Across Louisiana, volunteers are on the front lines, providing immediate comfort, financial resources, and emotional support to families during what is often the most difficult day of their lives.
We want to extend a sincere thank you to the team at Unum for honoring our volunteers and for showing a dedicated interest in how to make homes safer across our state. It is through these local partnerships that we build a more resilient Louisiana.
