At its annual board meeting in June, Montana Red Cross presented awards to three volunteers for their exceptional service in the past year. We also honored a pair of board members who are retiring from the board.
JUDY MILLER, MISSOULA
Judy, a disaster health services volunteer, received the Tom Wozniak Volunteer Award for Excellence, given to the volunteer who exemplifies the highest level of commitment to Red Cross values while delivering superior service.
“I have never once heard Judy Miller say ‘no’ when it comes to a client’s needs,” said Winnie Lohof, Red Cross regional direct services program manager. “Whether responding to a home fire or a natural disaster, she consistently responds with a smile on her face.”
In the past year, Judy volunteered 631 hours at the Red Cross. She continuously goes above and beyond for her Missoula County community as well as the communities across the Idaho, Montana and East Oregon Region. Winnie said Judy has taken new nervous but excited disaster health services volunteers and turned them into confident and knowledgeable individuals. She navigates the health care system to help clients replace their medications, their walkers and their glasses.
“She wants to help build up the amazing community of the Red Cross and in doing so, supports our ability to respond effectively and efficiently to our clients when they need us most,” Winnie said. “She truly turns compassion into action.”
JO SCOTT, KALISPELL
“Jo is always positive and kind and ready to help,” Winnie said.
Jo received the Volunteer Engagement Award, presented to the most active volunteer in Montana. She serves as the recovery regional event administrator, serves on the Northwest Montana Disaster Action Team and is a home fire campaign team member.
Jo has been a Red Cross volunteer since 2005 and logged an amazing 2,103 hours during FY24.
The regional event administrator is a critical position in our ability to provide immediate assistance to those impacted by disasters. This role also plays an important part within our case management system, especially when a disaster response exceeds the size and scope of a local disaster action team response and is scaled up to a larger relief operation.
CAROL SCHROEDER, HELENA
Carol is this year’s winner of the Biomedical Services Volunteer Excellence Award.
She volunteers as a blood donor ambassador and plays a crucial role in the blood donation process by ensuring that donors have a positive and smooth experience. Carol provides a warm welcome to donors and answers questions about the donation and check-in process. She offers refreshments to donors after they give and engages in friendly conversation to ensure donors feel appreciated and valued.
Carol said she volunteers with Red Cross for many reasons.
“I believe in the Red Cross mission and values; I wish to help create a positive experience for the donors; to give back to my town, state and country; and last but most important, because it is a happy place with lots of smiles from staff and donors, lots of laughter and music,” she said.
